To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of my family's arrival in Australia, I decided to write this lovely little poem to mark this special occasion, with some of the thoughts, as I remember them, so long ago...
"50 Years In Australia" ~ 1968 - 2018
It was a hot Sunday afternoon
As the B.O.A.C. Flight came into land
We knew no-one on our arrival
But we hoped to meet the locals soon
We had arrived on Aussie land
The taxi drove us to our hostel
We passed many strange new sights
Although we didn't see any kangaroos
We saw plenty of Kookaburras in flight
We arrived at our destination ... bemused
Our body clocks were out of whack
We had no idea ... the time of day
We fell asleep all afternoon
We had yet to face the task to unpack
It was an awfully hot Sunday afternoon
We had come from the U.K. Spring
And arrived into the Aussie Autumn
Despite the unusual heat of that hot Sunday afternoon
We were glad to make the transition
Even though it would take us time to be accustomed
The years have since passed by
Ten, Twenty, Thirty and Forty
Though sadly, we all went our separate ways
With Dad having since passed away
Mum now lives her life alone
Though we mainly stay in touch by 'phone
It's been Fifty years since I arrived in Oz
From 24th March 1968, at the age of eight
To 2018, at the age of now, fifty-eight
Only to discover many years later
It was also my 2nd husband's birth date
Happy 59th birthday, dear David
Happy 50th anniversary, to my mother and brother
